TIMELINE OF SOUTH AFRICA: 1912-CURRENT
1912- Native National Party, late the African National Congress (ANC) founded.
1913- Land Act introduced to prevent blacks from buying property outside the reserves.
1914- National Party founded.
1934- The Union of South Africa parliament established the Status of the Union Act making South Africa a "sovereign independent state".
DEC. 1943- ANC Youth League is adopted by ANC at conference at Botshabelo.
SEPT. 1944- ANC Youth League has its official inauguration.
1948- Policy of apartheid put into place with the National Party being elected into power in the 1948 election.
1950- The South African population is classified by race and segregated with the Group Areas Act. The ANC responds with civil disobedience.
1951- Tambo and Mandela open the first black law firm in South Africa.
1954- Tambo was elected as Secretary General of ANC and received a banning order from the state.
DEC. 6, 1956- Tambo detained from his wedding on treason charges which were later aquitted.
DEC. 1958- Tambo was appointed by the National Executive to head the conference which was interrupted by former ANC members known as Africanists. But Tambo convinced them to leave and they formed the Pan-Africanist Congress (PAC).
1960- South Africa declared a republic and is removed from Commonwealth. The ANC launches sabotage campaign.
1960- Tambo embarked on a "Mission in Exile" to gain international support for South African liberation movements. He traveled across the border of Botswana and is was a perilous journey.
1960's- International pressure increases as South Africa is excluded from Olympic Games.
1966- Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd is assassinated.
1970's- More than 7 million people forcefully relocated into black 'homelands'.
1976- More than 600 killed in conflicts between black protestors and white security forces which began in Soweto.
1984-89- Township revolt, state of emergency.
1989- Public facilities desegregated and many ANC leaders/activists were released.
1990- ANC unbanned and Nelson Mandela is released after 27 years in prison.
1991- De Kierk revokes remaining apartheid policies and international sanctions are lifted.
APR.24, 1993- Oliver Tambo passed away due to a stroke.
1994- April, ANC wins first non-racial elections. Government of National Unity is formed, Commonwealth membership is restored, remaining sanctions are lifted, and South Africa has a seat in the United Nations General Assembly after a 20 year absence.
MAY.10, 1994- Nelson Mandela is inaugurate as the first democratically elected President of South Africa.
