During his mission abroad, Oliver Tambo addressed the United Nations (UN) on posing sanctions against South Africa. The UN strongly opposed apartheid and supported the ANC in its mission to desegregate South Africa. They only way for the National Party to uphold laws was to deprive any opposition of political expression. The ANC lost its credibility and political power when they were exiled and deemed a terrorist group within South Africa. However due to his established relationship with the UN, Tambo was afforded the political authority to speak to other important international organizations and governments on posing sanctions on South Africa to unseat the National Party. The UN brought worldly attention to apartheid showing the barbarity of the system, encouraging popular resistance, promoting anti-apartheid actions in government and non-government organizations, organizing an arms embargo, and boycotts of apartheid.
Tambo’s strong relationship with the UN provided him with the capability of bringing worldly attention and action against apartheid by inducing stress on the South African government. As the UN sanctions and Tambo’s international support began to effect, the apartheid began to dissolve at an accelerated rate. |
