Racial inequality was a problem within South Africa since its colonization by the Dutch and then the British in the mid 1600-1800’s. Apartheid was made a legal set of segregation laws in the 1948 election by the National Party.
The National Party represented nationalist Afrikaners who won the national election off of racism and segregation. They built off of older laws making them more severe and enforced them much more aggressively. The Afrikan nationalism that grew in the 1920’s to the 1930’s was a critical factor in the National Party’s successful election. The Afrikaner nationalism grew along with the foundation of Calvinist religious thought that Afrikaner’s were God’s “chosen people” and were united in the language Afrikaan. The Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa gave a theological reasoning for apartheid for Afrikaners confirming the Calvinist thought. Afrikaner power also grew due to its capital increasing through the insurance of Sanlama and the Volkskas Bank (ABSA) and Afrikaner workers began forming ethnic unions such as Spoorbond.
